Interesting fact

The translator of Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos, F.E. Robbins (1940, Loeb Classical Library), provided a description of the Ptolemaic/Placidus method of celestial partition that is notably more precise than those offered by subsequent commentators, including figures such as Colin Evans, Charles E.O. Carter, and Ralph W. Holden. For the specific details on the Ptolemaic/Placidus method, refer to the Tetrabiblos, Book III, Chapter 10, pages 286-288, footnote 3.

Useful Information

Until the 18th century, the practices of astrology and astronomy remained largely undelineated or indistinguishable. Even though this integration began to dissolve following the scientific revolutions, after the Second Industrial Revolution, the discipline took an unfortunate turn, becoming largely synonymous with the generalised Sun-sign columns found in newspapers and magazines, often termed “Sun-sign astrology.” This popular construct can be more accurately described as a consumer product of contemporary western capitalist societies, rendering the designation “astrology” imprecise for serious discourse. Methodologically, traditional astrology encompasses the foundational and content-rich periods of the Hellenistic era and the Middle Ages, whereas the more sophisticated and/or technical developments of the 16th and 17th centuries (Renaissance) can be categorised as early modern or late traditional astrology. The discipline’s standing deteriorated significantly during the 19th century, period correctly termed contemporary astrology.
